When people think of a marquee it often conjures up thoughts of summer weddings, on the beautiful lawn of a country house or alternatively the hospitality area’s for VIP’s at major sporting events such as tennis or golf tournaments. However marquees can be used for many other occasions and applications. White Tent Events is a marquee company based in Bletchingley, Surrey. In the last few months we have installed marquees for a whole variety of uses ranging from the obvious weddings and birthday parties to funerals, storage solutions, pub smoking areas and even swimming pool covers for a winter pool party.

A beautiful winters wedding in Banstead, Surrey

White Tent Events were approached by a customer who was looking to hold a marquee wedding at the end of February, however they did not have anywhere suitable to situate the marquee. They were looking for a marquee for their wedding that would seat 100 people for a formal wedding breakfast, but also needed room for a 5 piece band and dance area and also a bar. Due to the type of dining they wanted they also required a catering marquee. They wanted a full starlight effect roof linings with dark mood lighting. Due to the wedding being held in February, with its notoriously bad weather, it was vital that the marquee was warm and that all the amenities were close by incase of bad weather.    

We suggested a venue in Banstead, Surrey  – called Zinnia gardens that has been designed specifically as a marquee venue. the customer was looking for around 100 people for a seated 3 course meal but wanted room for an extra 80 people to arrive after the meal, therefore the venue needed adequate parking for up to 80 cars. Zinnia gardens is perfect for this as they have a large car park – with enough parking for up to 150 Cars. They also provide a power supply so no extra costs are incurred hiring in generators etc.

We installed a 9m x 24m marquee that included a catering area. We also installed a entrance tent with glass patio doors. This meant that the edge of the marquee was at the bottom of a set of steps so the guest did not have to walk across the grass. The glass doors helped keep the heat in. We also installed another marquee at the rear with coat racks in and also another set of doors leading to the loo’s again keeping the customers warm and dry in case of bad weather.

We installed a 9m x 21m full starlight sky cloth across the roof of the marquee, this combined excellently with the black and white dance floor refecting the sky on its shiny surface. We installed light coloured walls with up lighters behind them. This produced a soft non intrusive light. The up lighters were attached to a dimmer allowing the customer to dim the lighting when the band started and after the meal had finished. They used Chez Vous as the event caters. Due to wet, soft ground we installed a solid marquee floor with a light gray carpet over the top. This again helped to keep the marque warm along with 2 ducted marquee heaters.

After the event we received an e-mail from the bride –

Want a marquee wedding but don't have the space?

One of the most popular and traditional types of wedding is a marquee wedding consisting of a drink reception outside the marquee to start then dinner and dancing. However for most people this produces a big problem as they do not have the space in their own garden to erect a marquee of adequate size for the number of guests. Marquee Hire - Top tips and common misconceptions.

Recently, when talking to clients, we’ve noticed the same common misconceptions often seem to arise, deterring people form choosing a marquee solution for their event.  Marquee hire often provides an excellent and inexpensive alternative to a permanent venue, allows you more choice and can be erected in some suppressing locations!

Here is White Tent Event's list of some of the most common misconceptions and a few of our Top Tips for dealing with them…

• People often assume it is only possible to build a marquee on a flat, well-mowed law. however this is no longer the case! With newer, more modern marquees, it’s easy to assemble a sub frame under the marquee allowing us to level any surface and to build a marquee on top.
  


• Trees, bushes, walls and ponds can all be incorporated inside a marquee, and often create a unique and exciting feature. White Tent Events have built marquees over swimming pools and ponds, steps and hedges, and have even built a marquee with a tree in the centre! – Nothings impossible! (Take a look at our gallery for a few examples)


• Marquees are not only summer time thing! Technology has moved on allowing us to install marquees all year round. With glass doors, solid flooring and thermostatically controlled heaters your marquee can be as warm and comfortable as an indoor venue – and often cheaper. Last year White Tent Events installed marquees for weddings in December, January and February.  


• Marquee weddings are not an expensive option. Often a marquee in your own garden is cheaper than it would be to book a venue. Every marquee is bespoke meaning the you get a choice in all aspects of the marquee, from the colour theme to the shape, meaning that it can be tailored to any budget.


• With a marquee you can impose your ideas.  Most permanent venues offer very little flexibility, with the same furniture and colures for every event they do.  But a marquee you can make look totally unique and tailored for you.  Pick your colour schema and lining, the furniture of your choice, and even where you want the doors to be.
